About Us

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) is an organ of the Federal Ministry of Education which is charged with the responsibility of regulating Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Nigeria. The Board was created by an Act of Parliament (Act No. 9 of 11 January, 1977) as a response to the federal Government of Nigeria realization of the need to develop a critical man-power base to execute the nation’s National Development Plans initiated in the 1970s.

Mandate

The core mandate of NBTE is to coordinate all aspects of Technical and Vocational Education falling outside the university education system.

The Vision of the Board is “To be a world-class regulatory body for the promotion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Nigeria”.

 

Mission

The mission statement of NBTE is “To promote the production of skilled technical and professional manpower for the development and sustenance of the national economy”.

 

NBTE REVIEWS ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR HND PROGRAMMES IN NBTE REGULATED INSTITUTIONS

Following complaints received on perceived mismatch on some National Diploma (ND) programmes as requirements for certain Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, the Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje has approved the review and production of a comprehensive entry requirement for all accredited programmes that are offered at HND level across the country.

Technology-Enabled Quality Assurance

In response to the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the Federal Government's strategic emphasis on a digitally-driven economy, our Board has spearheaded the development of a digital platform for seamless communication with all institutions within our regulatory ambit. In alignment with this technological thrust, the Board is proud to unveil a paradigm-shifting approach—Technology-Driven Quality Assurance for TVET Institutions. This pioneering initiative seeks to significantly curtail the need for on-site visits, thereby relieving financial pressures on institutions nationwide. Notably, it fosters sustainability by obviating the requirement for the traditional submission of Self-Study Questionnaires (SSQ), hitherto presented in hardbound copies.

The Illegal Activities of Novelty Polytechnic, Kishi, Oyo State

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has received several petitions and complaints against the Novelty Polytechnic, Kishi which alleged that the Polytechnic is offering unapproved programmes and also operating illegal campuses existing either as outreach/study centres or satellite campuses. The Board in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) carried out discreet investigations on the allegations. Findings of the investigations revealed that there is an act of outright violation of government policy on the Ban on Satellite Campuses and Outreach/ Study Centres by the Novelty Polytechnic, Kishi, Oyo State as well as a contravention of the Board’s Regulations on Offering Unapproved Programmes and Affiliations with other Institutions.

Strengthening Research and Publications in TVET: NBTE Unveils Revamped Journal

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has taken significant strides to fortify innovative research and publications in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, with the unveiling of the Nigeria Journal of Technical Education (NJTE) Vol. 21. Prof. Idris Bugaje, the Executive Secretary of NBTE, made this announcement during the ceremony at the NBTE Head Office in Kaduna.

NBTE Trains Over 1000 Entrepreneurship Educators in Polytechnics and Similar Institutions

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has successfully trained over a thousand educators from polytechnics and various institutions across Nigeria. This comprehensive workshop, centered on the reviewed entrepreneurship and skills development curricula, was conducted in collaboration with Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and Danglo Management and Financial Limited. The training sessions were conducted across all six geopolitical zones.

Brain Drain: Nigeria's Imperative for Indigenous Production of Laboratory Tools

Prof. Idris Bugaje, the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), has emphasized the critical need for Nigeria to embrace indigenous production and fabrication of laboratory equipment, tools, and resources. Speaking at a workshop on the development of engineering laboratories for polytechnics organized by LiviaSoft in Abuja, Prof. Bugaje highlighted the opportunities inherent in such initiatives.

NBTE UNVEILS 61 CURRICULA, COURSEWARE AND NOS FOR ND/NID/HND ODFeL AND NSQs

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has unveiled 61 new and reviewed curricula for National Diploma (ND), National Innovation Diploma (NID) and Higher National Diploma (HND) as well as ND Courseware for Open, Distance and Flexible e-Learning (ODFeL) and the National Occupational Standards (NOS) between 2021 and 2022. According to the Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, the new and reviewed curricula was long overdue as they would help to provide general guide to institutions in determining the body of knowledge and skills, while also addressing the employability problems in the country. He stated that the number of developed curricula, courseware and NOS unveiled represents about 15 per cent of the total.

NBTE Signs MoU with IUT Bangladesh

In his untiring effort to reposition the TVET sector in Nigeria, the Executive Secretary Prof. Idris M. Bugaje visited the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) Bangladesh on a partnership mission. The visit to the IUT which is a leading TVET teachers training and development Institution was aimed at partnership in the training of TVET teachers in Nigeria.

NBTE SIGNS MoU WITH ERYK TO IMPLEMENT THE NYSE PROGRAMME II

Following the approval of the Concept Note on the Nigerian Youth Skills Empowerment Programme (NYSE), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Eryk Group on youths’ apprenticeship training in Europe, under the Nigerian Youth Skills Empowerment II (NYSE-2) programme. The signing of the MoU was a follow-up of a meeting between the Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje and the President of Eryk Consulting Mr Jens-Chritian Moller in Abuja.
